Honey butter chicken and icebox cake are not enough choices for you? No worries, I have more fun foods to make in Part Two of Upgrading your K-snacks, and this time the focus is on fire noodles!
We’ll make a simple fire noodle barbecue sauce, and some delicious rabokki–ramen and ddeokbokki (spicy rice cakes) together as a meal. Both of these can come from one pack of fire noodles and a few extra ingredients.
Fire Noodle Barbecue Sauce
Let’s start with the simpler one: the barbecue sauce. Making this does not actually involve any real measuring; it’s all done by personal taste and preferences!
- Sauce pack from your fire noodles
- Your favorite barbecue sauce
You can choose from original barbecue, honey barbecue, hickory smoked barbecue, or any other kind of barbecue you like! I chose my homemade barbecue sauce this time around.
Directions: Pour a half a bottle of barbecue sauce into a bowl and mix in some of the fire noodle sauce bit-by-bit until you reached your desired spice level.
- Save any leftover sauce in an airtight container and store in your fridge. The sauce is good until the date on your barbecue sauce’s original bottle.
For this batch, I made seared pork belly sandwiches, and will be using what is left over to make barbecued ribs for a family get-together. This mix makes an excellent, flavourful replacement for anything that requires the use of barbecue sauce.
So, you stole the sauce out of your fire noodle ramen, and now you just have the noodles. What can you do with that? Make some quick rabokki! All you really have to do is boil a few ingredients, coat it in sauce, add some toppings, and BOOM! You now have some delicious rabokki! This snack was my favorite go-to in college, and it still is as a full-time employee with no time to cook elaborate meals on super busy days.
- A premade rabokki sauce
- Ddeok in the short, cylindrical shape
- Fishcake (optional)
All of the above can be found either in the frozen and/or refrigerated section of your local Asian market.
- Garnishes of your choice (I chose American cheese, green onions, and sesame seeds.)
- Fill a medium-sized pot halfway with water and bring to a boil.
- Boil each ingredient until cooked, and then set aside.
- I usually boil my noodles for a minute then add the ddeok and boil for another minute.
- Depending on what fishcake you bought, you’ll either have to boil or stir-fry them. Be sure to follow the cook times on all ingredients according to the packages.
- Once everything is fully cooked and drained, add them to a big enough skillet and add your premade ddeokbokki sauce.
- Cook on medium low heat until the sauce is nice and hot.
- Place it all in a bowl and add your garnishes! A filling and delicious meal is now ready in under thirty minutes.
